SHOULD COLD CALLERS BE SHOWN THE DOOR?5.23.00pm GMT Fri 12th Feb 2010
Letters are going out to residents living in Marsden and Honley asking whether Cold Callers should be shown the door for good. The letters ask residents whether they want "No Cold Calling Zones" (also known as "No Uninvited Trader Zones") to be implemented. The Zones affectively ban door step traders from operating in an area. Colne Valley and Holme Valley North Area Committees have both provided funds to support the implementation of the zones in Marsden and Honley respectively. Residents have until the 12 March to reply to the proposals after which it is hoped that the zones will be officially up and running by the end of March. Cllr Nicola Turner, Lib Dem Chair of Colne Valley Area Committee said: "I am very firmly behind the introduction of no cold calling zones in Honley and Marsden. It is an initiative that is proven to work in Kirklees with successful schemes already running in Meltham, Kirkburton and Emley. "We're all aware of stories where vulnerable people have been taken advantage of by predatory door step traders. The No Cold Calling Zone Scheme reinforces the "don't buy on the door step" message to people and gives them the power to turn callers away knowing that they can report them to Trading Standards and that action will be taken. It also provides a big deterrent to rogue callers who know there is a greater chance of being picked up by the police." "I Encourage people to write in support of the proposal." The No Cold calling Scheme is run in partnership with Trading Standards. The funds provided by the Area Committees will pay for information packs to be circulated to all households and for street signs to be erected."
