- £600 million pound investment is once in a lifetime opportunity
Cllr Karam Hussain (Lib Dem of Dewsbury West Ward) has called for members of all parties to get behind the regeneration of Dewsbury after Full Council made the difficult decision to release land in Chidswell and Dewsbury South for housing as party of its LDF Core Strategy in order to attract a £600 million+ investment to the area.
Kirklees Full Council decided it Core Strategy after a marathon debate in the Council Chamber in Huddersfield on the 23 November 2011.
Cllr Karam Hussain said:
"I have been an Elected Member in Dewsbury for many years and I am committed today to the area and its improvement as I have ever been.
"During my time I have seen many positive things happen in Dewsbury but I have also witnessed decline. Many of our shops are empty; many people are unemployed and there are issues with overcrowding in homes and a housing shortage which need to be addressed. Despite the best efforts of the Council, these problems have continued to grow.
"The decision to release land in Dewsbury South and at Chidswell, the latter attached to a business development, will attract a once in the lifetime £600 million pound investment. There will be new, better homes, new jobs, along with a massive investment in highways infrastructure, public amenities, schools and so on
"The current economic climate was already making Dewsbury's situation even more challenging. To ignore the opportunity for such a massive cash injection would almost certainly condemn Dewsbury to a continued decline.
"I call on all other Dewsbury Members to now get behind what is once in a lifetime opportunity which would well be the turning point for the area."
