COUNCILLORS believe a broken water feature should not be fixed until the economy improves.

The £230,000 cascade at St George's Square has been out of action since a pump broke earlier this month.

Kirklees Council is also struggling to remove white stains on the black granite of the water feature.

Lindley's three Lib Dem councillors believe the cascade, which costs £50,000 a year to run, should be left unrepaired.

Clr Christine Stanfield said: "That feature is neither use nor ornament, and as such the money should be put to better use.

"In these difficult times I am sure residents would prefer to think that £50,000 a year was being spent in a more productive way."

Her colleague Clr Cahal Burke added: "Filling the feature with flowers would add colour and would be a great addition to the square and the cost would be minimal."

Clr Tony Woodhead said: "I cannot for the life of me imagine anyone putting in a water feature of any sort without checking that the acidity of the water would not effect it in any way."

The cascade is part of a controversial £4m redevelopment of the square which was unveiled last October.

No-one from the council was able to comment on the concerns.
