Commenting on the victory for the 'Yes' side in the Irish referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon, local Euro MP, Diana Wallis, said:
"I am delighted with the result. Now with the democratic nature of the European Union reinforced with more power set to come to the European Parliament, national parliaments and the peoples of Europe, we have the real potential to tackle the issues that matter to people: economic recovery and climate change."
Diana Wallis, a Vice President of the European Parliament, also said:
"Now the 'eurosceptics' who have poured such a lot into obtaining a 'no' vote have had their answer, their moment is past, as after a real debate people see the value of Europe.
"I am just envious that the Irish could have a sensible debate about their country's relationship with the EU. Such a debate is long overdue in the UK. That is why I have always supported the idea of a referendum in this country; it ultimately assists the process of change."
