http://www.colnevalleylibdems.org.uk/>Nicola Turner and Colne Valley Lib Dems are campaigning for more resources to be out into local healthcare. At the spring Yorkshire conference, they will be putting forward the following motion:
"Conference notes the report "Healthy Ambitions" published in 2008 by the NHS in Yorkshire & the Humber, which highlights the following problems:
a) The health of children in Yorkshire & the Humber is among the worst in England. Close to 1 in 5 boys and 3 in 10 girls are predicted to be obese by 2010 - for girls, this is twice the national average.
b) Infant and child mortality rates are higher than in England as a whole and vary considerably across the region.
c) Studies consistently demonstrate that anaemia is particularly prevalent among children, teenage and student females and nursing mothers in Sheffield, Bradford and Leeds.
d) There is poor uptake of breastfeeding in many areas.
e) There are significant unexplained variations in the use of services, e.g. a 10-fold variation in numbers of children attending A&E departments depending on which practice a child is registered with.
f) Only 15% of children with diabetes have good diabetic control.
g) There are high rates of admission of children to hospital with acute asthma; the North West and Yorkshire & the Humber have the highest admission rates for acute asthma in England.
h) Mental health services and other services do not always link together well.
Conference believes that this state of affairs is totally unacceptable. It therefore urges all the region's LibDem MPs and councillors to use all the influence at their disposal to ensure that the Yorkshire & the Humber region is provided with all the resources required to remedy this appalling situation as soon as possible."
