Local Lib Dem councillors at the play area
The marathon wait is over! After a wait claimed to exceed 40 years, the residents and children on the Corn Mill Fields Estate in Slaithwaite have their brand new play area.
Land originally allocated to the Housing Department at Kirklees Council has finally been utilised for this project and following decisions made by the Kirklees cabinet, work was commissioned to implement the play area.
'This has been a really long haul', commented Cllr http://www.colnevalleylibdems.org.uk/>Nicola Turner, Chair of the Colne Valley Area Committee. Way back in the 1960's, local residents began the campaign to get a play area for their children. Cllr Heather Swift championed their cause for many years and following her death in 1998, Cllr Margaret Fearnley has maintained the pressure. Today, of course, there would be a planning requirement to include an open space for local residents on an estate of this size.
It is no exaggeration to remark that some of the children involved in the original campaign are now grandparents themselves. Cllr http://www.colnevalleylibdems.org.uk/>Nicola Turner arranged for the funding to be supported by the Area Committee, Leisure Services and Housing. This has been a particularly complicated task, bringing together so many different elements. But, at last, it is done and we all hope that the local children will have many happy years playing in this new, safe environment.
