Nicola Turner - Colne Valley Candidate

Nicola Turner has worked for the Liberal Democrats for many years, acting as a constituency chair, treasurer, membership secretary and local agent. Nicola is a past Chair of Governors and is currently a governor at her childrens' high school. She has served on many local committees and is treasurer of a riding club.

A committed Christian, Nicola worships at a local church. Nicola is part of a pilot initiative in the Colne Valley to find practical projects that will bring about a reduction in carbon emissions.

Nicola is married to John and they have four children. She runs a manufacturing company employing 30 people.

Local Action...

Working with colleagues, Nicola has been busy with the following:

• Roads resurfaced - Round Ings Road and High Street in Scapegoat Hill, O'Cot Lane and Pole Gate Scammonden, Laund Road, Bradshaw Road, Intake, Coal Gate, Holme Lane at Upper Slaithwaite, Station Road and Peel Street in Marsden and many others

• Pavements resurfaced

• New street lights installed

• Footpaths & bridleways re-instated

• Scapegoat Hill Play Area - new play equipment and new surfacing

• Gordon Street Play Area - all new play area

• Overhanging trees cut back and weeds and vegetation removed

• Fly tipping removed

• Promised new Youth Hub for Colne Valley

• Funding secured until September 2009 for Colne Valley Taxi Bus

• Sports pitch at Hollins Glen redone. Funds from Area Committee secured for improvements to Slaithwaite Spa pitch.

• Pictorial signs to stop HGV's using minor roads to be installed soon.

• Started a Friends of Slaithwaite Station group

Nicola is also involved with...

The Marsden Mechanics Management Committee.

Neighbourhood Management Group meetings.

Ad hoc residents meetings to discuss particular issues.

She is a member of the Sam Whitehead (of Fearnlea, Marsden) Trust and a director of Yorkshire Energy Services, as well as being a Governor at Salendine Nook High School.


STAY SAFE AND KEEP WARM PACKS

Two significant projects have been launched recently at the Colne Valley Area Committee public meeting. As a result, Stay Safe Packs and Keep Warm Packs have been developed to help the elderly/vulnerable adults in the community.

You may not believe it, but the Yorkshire and the Humber Liberal Democrats Spring 2010 Regional Conference (what "spring"? you may well ask) is only a month away. The date for your diary is Saturday 20 February and the place is Harrogate (a jewel of a town at any time of year).

Cllr David Ridgway will demand answers at today's council meeting to establish how well Kirklees was prepared for the arctic conditions. He will urge the Labour Cabinet to take away any lessons that can be learned and make the necessary changes to better prepare the borough for the future.
